Pregnant & breast-feeding women

Women in their reproductive years should consult a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or local public health office about recommended immunization before and during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
Before pregnancy
  • Check the need for all recommended vaccines for adults including:
    measles-mumps-rubella, varicella, tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, hepatitis A & B, meningococcal, pneumococcal, HPV, influenza
During pregnancy
  • Check for vaccines that are contraindicated or not recommended
    examples: measles-mumps-rubella, varicella, yellow fever, HPV
  • All other vaccines are considered safe and should be reviewed
After pregnancy
  • Most vaccines are safe while breast-feeding
  • Immunization status of all household contacts of the newborn should also be reviewed
